SEARCH ALGORITHMS POWER A $5 BILLION ONLINE ADVERTISING INDUSTRY.

Search algorithms are one of two critical dimensions of content engineering. Firstly, understanding the algorithm is useful in determining the systematic process to assure your site earns its share of ranking opportunity.

In the old days...

Primitive search algorithms used to analyze only the information contained in certain 'meta' tags of web pages. Meta tags are browser format instructions that describe the data contained on the web page. Popular meta tags cover attributes like:

  • author
  • description
  • keywords
  • application that the developer used to create the page.

Meta tags are hidden elements of web pages that are never presented in the browser window, but are useful in other contexts besides presentation of the page.

Search algorithm gamers spoiled the fun...

This search algorithm was simple and faster than having humans analyze each website like what Yahoo! was doing in a big directory, and faster than analyzing all the content on the page. Unfortunately, unscrupulous people learned the game pretty quickly and the search users were tricked into visiting pages built solely for the purpose of getting visitors - regardless of the content topic. These so-called gamers ruined the experience for others by populating those meta tags with trash, and gaming the search algorithm to fool search engines and their users. Fortunately this worked for only a short time.

Thanks to Google, who introduced a new search algorithm.

Starting in 1998? Google offered a completely different search algorithm that presented more relevant results more often than their search competitors. This algorithm would analyze the meta tags and other hidden aspects of the web page, and especially, it would analyze the content that users see. Furthermore, Google introduced a powerful credibility feature - the pagerank. The page rank determines how many other sites link to this site.

This is the reason why Google's been so successful at market share. They operate a business model that has earned millions of Internet users' trust. A model built on integrity of results. A model that rewarded those web publishers with good content, with good traffic.

That's where Googlemeister can lend our expertise.
